The main objective of the bioengineering program is to educate bioengineers and academicians who are innovative, well trained in bioengineering and biotechnology fields, able to follow developments at global level and, able to carry out interdisciplinary work regarding ethical values.
In addition, another purpose of the Bioengineering Department is to contribute to the scientific power of the city and the country and the Research & Development (R&D) potential of the country by getting research projects from institutions such as TUBİTAK, BAP. Since the undergraduate program of the Bioengineering Department is a multidisciplinary program, it is closely cooperating with Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering Departments in the engineering Faculty and Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics Departments in the Faculty of Science.
What does a Bioengineer Do?
Bioengineers are the ones who are trying to solve problems of agriculture, food, pharmaceutical and medical sciences by adding biological principles to engineering principles. Bioengineers contribute to the production of commercial biotechnology (recombinant enzymes, etc.) and traditional products (bakery yeast etc.) by taking part in the production processes and R & D stages of industries such as food and pharmaceutical industry. Designing new biotechnological products (drug substance, artificial tissue, etc.) and production processes of these products are also among the basic tasks of bioengineers.
Working Areas and Job Opportunities
Graduates of the bioengineering department will be able to find employment in all public institutions operating in areas where biotechnology can be applied, especially in the public agricultural sector (forestry, fisheries, animal husbandry, crop production, food production, health) and public and private agricultural industry. In the field of medicine, it will be possible to work in genetic diagnosis and treatment centers, biotechnology, biomedical and pharmaceutical companies, vaccine production facilities. They can also conduct research in the fields of life sciences such as science, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, environment and food engineering, biomedicine and field plants in public and private sectors and work in high technology institutions.
With increasing interest in biotechnology and bioengineering in the private sector in recent years, alumni can be involved in Research & Development (R & D), clinical research and production departments.
Due to the fact that it is an area suitable for individual entrepreneurship and because entrepreneurship occupies an important place in the vision of the department, the graduates of bioengineering department form private companies in this area by establishing private companies.
