About Us

Established by decision oft the meeting of the Executive Board of Higher Education held on 19 November 2008, our Department comprises four academic divisions: General Sociology and Methodology, Social Structure and Change, Sociology of Institutions, and Applied Sociology. The Department has a total of 10 academic staff members, consisting of 1 professor, 2 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, and 1 research assistant. 

In accordance with the general principles governing higher education in Türkiye, the Department of Sociology aims to develop students’ ability to analyse social phenomena from multiple perspectives and formulate critical assessments in light of contemporary scientific developments and technological advances. To this end, the programme provides systematic education in the principal theoretical frameworks and research methods underpinning sociological inquiry while also seeking to equip students with a broad cultural and intellectual foundation. The Department aims to achieve this objective by integrating the theoretical, methodological, and practical components of the programme.

The theoretical component of the programme aims to provide students with a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective on the social sciences. Within this framework, students are encouraged to develop an understanding that extends beyond sociology and encompasses other social science disciplines. In this way, they acquire the theoretical foundation, analytical thinking skills, and conceptual knowledge necessary to conduct academic research.

The methodological component of the programme aims to equip students with knowledge and skills relating to scientific research processes, particularly quantitative and qualitative research methods. The methodological competencies acquired within this framework enable graduates to work effectively in a variety of settings, including universities, public institutions, private-sector research units, and civil society organisations.

The practical component of the programme aims to develop students’ ability to apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge to social realities. In this context, students acquire the conceptual tools and critical thinking skills necessary to analyse the behaviour of individuals and social actors, the functioning of social structures and processes, and political, economic, and cultural dynamics within an analytical framework.
