DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY

As part of Literature Department of Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University, archaeology department was established in 2012. Undergraduate program is opened right after it completed its substructure in 2013-2014. Preparation for English program is available for students who want to enhance their language skills. Our department aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of archaeology, and all of our staff members aims to give a qualified education. Archaeology department consists of five Assistant Professors and four assistants. The members of the department were chosen according to their professions. Our attention centres on Anatolia and its neighbours: students will be able to train themselves through Palaeolithic Era to the Classical World, and the Byzantine Empire. Furthermore, students will learn Greek and Roman history, their architecture, ceramics and other findings that include domestic lives of people who lived in previous periods.

All academic staff are part of archaeological researches in Karaman and its neighbours.  Within this context, we have conducted an excavation project in the Necropol at Gökçeseki in Ermenek (district of Karaman). Furthermore, a survey with the participation with the staff members is in progress that issues "Settlements in Ancient Era and their Orders" in Karaman and Mut district in Mersin. Apart from Karaman, our staff are member of other excavation projects that are conducted in Turkey. This allows students to their internships in variety of excavations.

With their initiative, students of archaeology have assembled Archaeology Community in 2015. The community aims to improve students in terms of social, cultural and academic disciplines and it is supervised by our academic staff. The community organizes tours to archaeological areas during both semesters. Moreover, the community invites academicians all over Turkey to present lecture.

At the end of the program, students will be able to apply for Minister of Culture and Tourism, other public institutions, private museums and municipalities. In addition, they can pursue academic career and can apply for Master and PhD degrees.
