Prof. Dr. Mehmet Mercan, one of the faculty members of our department, gave a conference on the Domestic Travels of Ottoman Sultans. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Mercan expressed his thoughts as follows: "The territories under the administration of the Ottoman Empire spanned three continents and covered a vast geography. For this reason, the relationship between the people living in the provinces and the sovereign was limited solely to correspondence. This situation prevented the relations between the provincials and the administrators from developing sufficiently, making it difficult for the people to reach the sovereign, to seek their rights, to achieve sovereign-people integration, and to ensure a just administration. For this reason, Ottoman sultans began to undertake domestic tours starting from Sultan Mahmud II. For the first time in Ottoman history, Sultan Mahmud II embarked on tours within the country to closely observe the state of the realm, to identify the needs of the people on the spot, and to listen to their complaints. During these tours, the Sultan listened to the troubles of the citizens and gave the necessary orders to the authorities for their resolution. In addition, he received successful military and civil officials in the settlements and rewarded them. After Mahmud II, almost all Ottoman sultans undertook domestic tours." The conference concluded thereafter.
