Department History And Introduction

 
 
The History Department, established by the decision taken at the meeting of the Higher Education Executive Board on 19.11.2008, consists of the departments of Ancient History, Medieval History, New Era History, Modern History, History of the Republic of Turkey, General Turkish History, History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization. Our department started education in the 2009-2010 academic year and the first graduates were given in 2013.
 
Undergraduate education in our department covers a period of four years. The language of education is Turkish. In addition to compulsory courses, students can also take elective courses in the field they want to specialize in. The education program carried out in the History Department aims to train historians.
 
Our department accepts a number of undergraduate students determined by the Council of Higher Education each year. Graduates of high schools or equivalent schools who want to receive undergraduate education in the program must have received a sufficient score from the Higher Education Institutions Exam.
 
Students who enroll in the History Department must complete 240 ECTS by taking elective courses in addition to compulsory courses in order to graduate.
 
Students' success is evaluated within the scope of written and oral exams, assignments given during the semester, and seminars. Students who receive one of the grades A, B, C, D, or E from a course are considered to have passed that course. Otherwise, they repeat these courses.
 
Our department offers Master's and Doctorate programs in the History Department. In addition, graduates of the department can pursue postgraduate education in the departments of History, Ancient History, Medieval History, New Era History, Modern History, Turkish Republic History, General Turkish History, Ottoman Institutions and Civilization History, provided that they meet the necessary requirements.
 
There are 19 academic staff in the History Department of Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University, Faculty of Letters.
 
The outcomes that students will gain upon successful completion of our department are as follows:
 
1. They grow up as individuals who have universal values, are knowledgeable, and equipped in the field of history.
 
2. In historical research, they can benefit from disciplines such as Sociology, Economics, Archeology, Philology, Philosophy and Literature in their own fields of study.
 
3. They can examine and interpret historical events from different perspectives.
 
4. They use historical research and writing methods, and carry out their studies within the framework of scientific ethical rules.
 
5. They make the information more permanent by using visual and auditory tools effectively in historical studies.
 
6. They have the archive, library and documentation information they need in their own field of research.
 
7. They know Islamic history and geography, and analyze its problems.
 
8. They have information about the sources of Turkish history.
 
9. They know Turkish history and culture, and can interpret its development process.
 
10. They are sensitive about the protection of historical heritage and historical texture.
 
11. They follow current national and international issues related to their field, and can solve problems encountered in individual and social issues with the knowledge they have gained during their education.
 
12. Recognizes ancient Near Eastern civilizations, can visit and examine historical sites, and has the knowledge to introduce these places to the environment in which he lives.
 
13. Knows the establishment and development process of the Republic of Turkey.
 
14. Reads source texts and documents related to Ottoman History.
 
15. Transfers the information obtained as a result of the research in written and oral form with the methodological methods he has.
 
16. Understands important events, people in history and their contributions to history.
 
 
What are the Job Opportunities for History Department Graduates?
 
Students who graduate from the history department are given the title of "Historian". Historians can also work in the public and private sectors. Teaching is the first job opportunity in the history department. A historian who completes his undergraduate education can take a formation training and become a teacher. They can also work as an instructor after passing the necessary exams in Turkey and abroad. Academic careers are also among the job opportunities in the history department. A historian who completes his undergraduate education can start his job by completing his master's and doctorate education.
 
Among the job opportunities in the history department, there is also the possibility of working as a researcher. Working in archives, libraries and museums are the main places of work. Providing consultancy services to visitors in museums and working as a researcher are among the job opportunities in the history department. Among the job opportunities, there is also the opportunity to work as a civil servant, expert and assistant expert at various levels of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In general, the job opportunities in the history department include; Turkish Historical Society, Atatürk Research Center, History Research Centers, General Directorate of State Archives and museums. They can work as teachers, academicians, lecturers and experts.
