As part of the “60+ Lifelong Learning Academy” activities carried out by Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University, a meaningful cultural and musical program was held on May 14, 2026. Contributing to university-city integration, the event featured a program titled “One Folk Song, One Story” presented by Asisst. Prof. Dr. Emre Koç from our department and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Aykaç from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature.
Within the scope of the program, Assoc. Prof. Onur Aykaç shared the historical and cultural background of the folk song “Kırklar Dağının Düzü (Suzan Suzi),” one of the memorable works of Turkish folk music. Following the narration of the story behind the song, Asisst. Prof. Dr. Emre Koç performed the piece accompanied by the bağlama. In addition, the folk songs “Neredesin Sen,” “Dostum Dostum,” and “Kendim Ettim Kendim Buldum” were also performed during the event.
Beyond being merely a musical recital, the event stood out as an important social responsibility initiative contributing to the transmission of cultural memory between generations. Organized within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Academy, which aims to keep individuals aged 60 and above socially, culturally, and mentally active, the program strengthened participants’ sense of belonging, increased their social interaction, and enabled them to reconnect with their cultural heritage. Academic studies indicate that the participation of older individuals in artistic and cultural activities has positive effects on psychological well-being, cognitive vitality, and social connectedness. In this regard, the “One Folk Song, One Story” program highlighted the role of folk music as a carrier of oral cultural tradition while also contributing significantly to the university’s mission of social engagement.
During the event, which was organized with the contribution of our department, participants were introduced to the historical background of folk songs, their place in collective memory, and their function in cultural transmission, all of which are important elements of Turkish folk culture. The program also reflected the university’s commitment to knowledge production and public service. Followed with great interest by the participants, the event served as an important example of strengthening the cultural ties between the university and the city.
