Tarih: 30 Ekim 2026

An event was organised on 27 October 2026 at 14:00 to mark the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye, under the leadership of the Deanship of the Faculty of Letters at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University, with contributions from the Department of History and the Harmoni Music Society.

The event, held at the Faculty of Letters Conference Hall, was attended by the Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gavgalı; the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Çakır; as well as academic and administrative staff and students. The programme commenced with opening remarks by Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gavgalı and Acting Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Çakır, followed by a musical performance by the Harmoni Music Society.

As part of the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erol Yüksel, a faculty member of our Department, delivered a conference entitled “The Proclamation of the Republic and Its Place in Turkish Political History.” In his presentation, Yüksel examined the historical process leading to the proclamation of the Republic and evaluated the political developments extending from the final years of the Ottoman Empire through the National Struggle to the establishment of the new Turkish state.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yüksel approached the proclamation of the Republic not merely as a change in the system of government but also as the institutional consolidation of the new political order that had emerged as a result of the National Struggle. In this context, he discussed the significance of the political and administrative developments during the final years of the Ottoman Empire, the circumstances that emerged in the aftermath of the First World War, and the growing emphasis on the principle of national sovereignty throughout the National Struggle in paving the way for the Republic. Focusing on the political and institutional transformations that culminated in the proclamation of the Republic on 29 October 1923, Yüksel highlighted the importance of this development in formally and definitively establishing the system of government of the new state. He emphasised the historical significance of the proclamation as the political and legal consolidation of the independence achieved through the National Struggle within a new system of governance. He also described the Republic as a decisive turning point in Türkiye's modernisation process and the formation of a contemporary state structure.

At the conclusion of the event, certificates of appreciation were presented to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erol Yüksel in recognition of his contribution to the conference and to the Harmoni Music Society for its musical performance. The certificates were presented by Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Gavgalı and the Vice Dean of the Faculty.

Held as part of the celebrations marking the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye, the event concluded with a contribution to participants' understanding of the historical foundations of the Republic and its place in Turkish political history.
