Program Description
The Foreign Languages Department offers intensive mandatory preparatory programs for students enrolled in programs taught in foreign languages. Additionally, it provides optional one-year preparatory courses for interested students. The department also conducts mandatory Foreign Language (English) I-II courses for all programs.
For students exempted from or who have successfully completed mandatory foreign language courses, elective foreign language courses may be offered by the department in later semesters, subject to availability. Moreover, the department offers vocational foreign language courses when established or requested.
Admission and Enrollment Requirements
Students newly enrolled in programs taught in foreign languages and who fail the proficiency exam are admitted to a one-year intensive mandatory preparatory program. Other students newly enrolled in their respective programs may also opt for the preparatory language program within the quotas determined by the department, considering available resources.
The time spent in the preparatory class is not considered in terms of credit hours required for associate, undergraduate, or graduate programs.
Graduation Requirements
Students who meet the required success criteria in the mandatory preparatory class are deemed to have successfully completed the preparatory program and are eligible to continue their main program. Students who fulfill attendance requirements and participate in exams but fail the preparatory program are allowed to take proficiency exams throughout their studies. Students who do not successfully complete the preparatory class within two years are dismissed from the program.
For students who successfully complete the optional preparatory class, their status and success are reported to the Student Affairs Department, which issues an “Optional Foreign Language Preparatory Program Success Certificate.”
Students who fulfill attendance requirements in the optional preparatory class but fail the exams continue their education in their main program. These students are allowed to take the year-end exams for optional preparatory classes until they graduate. Students who achieve the required score are considered to have successfully completed the optional preparatory class.
Assessment and Evaluation Principles
The success grade is calculated by taking 40% of the grades obtained from midterm exams and 60% of the final exam score. The required success grade for the preparatory class is determined by the relevant department and announced within one month of the start of the academic year.
The number of midterm exams, the contribution rates of other quizzes, assignments, and similar activities to the midterm grade are determined and announced by the department in line with the specific requirements of the foreign language. Additionally, one final exam is conducted during the academic year.
