DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

           Department of English Language and Literature adopts a student-oriented approach and puts students’ expectations at the center throughout the education process and activities. Faculty members of the department aim to present an academic environment where students can express themselves freely within the framework of respect and share their personal comments and opinions without hesitation in the light of the learnings they have acquired. Accordingly, in addition to the academic education given in the undergraduate program, open discussions and interchange of ideas based on scientific and academic issues between students and faculty members are the main objectives of the department.

           One of the primary goals of the department is to improve English speaking and comprehension skills of students and let them use the English language with correct pronunciation and fluency. In this respect, communication and verbal interaction in English between students with foreign nationalities and the ones whose mother tongue is Turkish will develop students’ acquisition of English language and make it permanent.

Education

          Language of education at the department is 100% English. The enrolled students are required to study English preparatory class for a year. Students who succeed in the English proficiency exam stated in the academic calendar by the School of Foreign Languages can be exempted from the preparatory school upon their request.

Lectures

          The English Department aims at providing students training and education to encourage critical thinking and to let them develop their academic writing and speaking skills and acquire detailed knowledge about the English language, literature, history and culture with the help of a curriculum and courses of studies prepared taking national and international criteria into consideration. Besides, through courses on American, Scottish and Irish literatures students will be able to expand their knowledge about the literature and culture of the US, Scotland and Ireland. The courses in the curriculum covering subjects directly related to literature such as Film Studies, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Mythology, Philosophy, War and Science Fiction will enrich students' intellectual knowledge.

Faculty / Different Language Opportunities

        Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University pays special attention to language and literature departments because Karaman is considered the capital of Turkish language. Moreover, the departments/academics of other languages such as German, French, Arabic, Persian, Russian and Chinese in addition to English enable the Faculty of Letters to be a significant center of language, literature and translation studies. Students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge to a certain extend about different languages and literatures in addition to the learnings they gain at their own department. 

International and National Student Exchange Programs

           In the upcoming years, it is planned to make bilateral agreements for Erasmus, Mevlana and Farabi student exchange programs.

          Our major aim is to let our students graduate as individuals who specialize in English language and literature and who can make use of their learnings to develop critical, analytical, rational interpretation and evaluation of their own society as well as world societies.

          We hope that our students' journey at the Department of English Language and Literature at Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University will contribute to their awareness as well as work ethics and discipline. Our purpose for our graduates is to enable them to have a humanist worldview and good qualifications for their future professions.
